Westvleteren 12 is a beer that's brewed by monks in the town of Westvleteren, according to the old Trappist traditions. A beer can only carry the official Trappist label if it is brewed by monks, within the walls of the abbey and solely for the support of their traditional lifestyle. There are only a dozen authentic Trappist beers in the world, and Westvleteren is widely regarded as the best.
Westvleteren 12 has always scored very high points in tasting competitions and with almost perfect scores, it has frequently received the award of best beer in the world. The monks make two other kinds of beer: Westvleteren 8 and the Westvleteren blond beer. Both are excellent beers that should absolutely be tried by anyone with an interest in Belgian beer.
